Journey to Freedom started at a modest YMCA in Brentwood, Tennessee. Since then, the groundbreaking program has grown like wildfire, to feed the need. Today, YMCAs and churches across the country are getting on board to become conduits in their communities for health and well-being. Now it’s your turn!
Mind, Body, Spirit Connection
As you know, it’s impossible to ignore the life stories and struggles of the people who come through the doors of the YMCA every day — thus, the catalyst for creating
Journey to Freedom. As a YMCA, you can use
Journey to Freedom to fill a critical need in your community by meeting not only the physical needs of people but also the mental and spiritual needs as well.
Expect a Better YMCA
As you implement
Journey to Freedom in your YMCA, the community you serve will begin to have a different perception of your YMCA.
- They will no longer see it as just a place to work out, but a healing place where a person’s entire life can change!
- They will begin to see the YMCA as a place for the support, encouragement, and accountability they need to change life-controlling issues.
Grow Membership
We’ve found that
Journey to Freedom cultivates new members, especially members who may be intimidated to come to the YMCA or are at a high risk to drop out. Not only will
Journey to Freedom draw new members, it will help retain current members because of the intimate relationships that your staff will create with them.
Journey to Freedom participants will bring you great stories and testimonies for your development and fundraising efforts.
Ignite Your Staff with JTF!
There’s no doubt that the morale of your staff will be positively influenced through adopting
Journey to Freedom as part of your YMCA’s offerings. Your staff will feel like they are making a difference in the lives of people daily as they promote complete wellness in the areas of spirit, mind, and body.
We’ve found that
Journey to Freedom will:
- Improve employee retention and reduce staff turnover rates.
- Help bridge the gap between departments in your YMCA. Because Journey to Freedom is not a department-specific program, your staff teams will begin to unite.
- Build relationships between your YMCA and area churches, therapists, and doctors. Like minds begin to forge to serve the community as a whole.

“We have not seen this kind of a response from any program we have ever launched. Our members are coming to us with stories of changed lives. It is easy to get behind a program like this. When you can be a part of bringing hope and healing to someone’s life, it truly fulfills the purpose of why the YMCA exists to begin with.”
— Carole Carter
Group Vice President of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee
